As some of you may have read or heard over the last few years,
Southend Pier has had many plans for redevelopment, all with the aim of making the best
of this unique feature that's situated in one of the UK's largest seaside resorts. On my travels around the internet I came
across a site that was discussing the plans and even provided a couple
of images which I thought you might like to see.
The proposed changes were:
- Changes to the foreshore end, including: A new pavilion, with space for the Pier Museum. There'll also be a nightclub.
- Changes to the trains: Re-instating the second track, providing new trains (with aircon and audio/visual), and new stations at both ends.
- Changes to the pier head, including, extreme sports, restaurants, bars and cafes, a 4D theatre, an observation sundeck, a conference centre, and an over-water rollercoaster.
The plans were put forward by Epic World Leisure, a large multinational company that were more than willing to pour cash into the pier and subsequently Southend's pretty stale economy.
As I looked over the images and ideas I grew exited, but then that was
quickly supressed by reading on to find that the plans had been
rejected. The total cost of the proposed developments to Southend's famous pier came to an estimated £45 million!
Surely we could have done with that sort of development occuring? I
will have to research a little more to find out all the details, but
when I do I'll be sure to let you all know why we didn't get a HUGE
rollercoaster at the end of the pier!
