The idea came when I returned from travelling overseas and returned to a Southend that had morphed from a melting pot of artistic ideas into a fully functioning creative underground. Southend has now featured in various artforms nationwide, from hairdressing (backed up by a new college/university building springing up in the town centre. Lee Stafford winning the Men’s British Hairdresser of the Year in 1998) through to photography (Dean Chalkley exhibiting in London and featuring in NME on numerous occasions) as obvious examples of Southend's sucess in the creative fields.
