Southend has two football teams: Southend United FC (also known as The Shrimpers) who were founded in 1906 in the Blue Boar pub and are currently based at Roots Hall Stadium and managed by Phil Brown, and Southend Manor who play in the Essex Senior League. Southend also has two rugby union clubs, Southend RFC and Westcliff RFC. Formerly, Southend was also home to the Essex Pirates basketball team who played in the British Basketball League for a couple of years up until 2011. Southend is also home to the Seaside Sirens female roller derby team and the Essex Men's roller derby team. There are many sports clubs and societies within Southend-on-Sea, from martial arts to rowing!

The modern sports centre offers a 25m swimming pool and diving pool, as well as a large indoor gym, fitness studio, both outdoor and indoor tennis courts, basket ball courts, netball courts and an 8 lane Olympic size Athletics track - all fully flood lit. Not to mention the sauna, steam room and spa to unwind after a challenging workout. There also multiple function rooms and cafés at the site.
