Local artist, Sharon Diack-Thicke, has recently been busy painting different locations around the Southend-on-Sea area. Her paintings have been making their way around local social media and receiving a lot of attention lately, and it’s no wonder. These paintings of Southend are stunning, and she deserves recognition for capturing our favourite views of Southend so beautifully.

We got a hold of Sharon and asked her why we’ve suddenly started seeing her paintings everywhere on social media!

I have been painting and drawing ever since I was a child. Recently I got the painting ‘bug’ again and painted some sights of places I had visited. After that, I wanted to paint the clock tower at Shoebury Garrison. I uploaded it to Twitter just to show my friends, and someone asked to buy it straight away. After that, I thought it might be nice to do a set of Southend and the surrounding area.

I’ve always just painted for myself and, occasionally, friends and family have asked me to draw or paint something for them. It was only after receiving some positive feedback on social media that I thought it would be worth trying to show them. As they say, sometimes your biggest regret is not doing something.

I am only a self-taught amateur artist and have a full time job, so although I would love to paint full time, I can still only do it in my spare time. But it relaxes me and gives me a lot of enjoyment, and it is lovely to hear other people’s comments when they say that a painting has evoked a memory or a feeling in them. That makes the hours that are put into it all worthwhile.

Sharon also has some wonderful paintings based on locations (far, far away) outside of Southend. Definitely worth showcasing here too.
